At that time it was more than 2000 acres in size, but through the years it was divided and sold, leaving the present Retreat Center with 283 acres. Many years of plantation life were experienced on the grounds, with the raising of cattle and row cropping being the most recent endeavors in agriculture.

Through the years the property has been called by different names, but seemingly became "Eastover" at the time Eastover and Westover were owned by two brothers. Eastover was purchased in 1972 by the Peninsula Baptist Association when it became a place for year-round Christian camps, retreats, and conferences.

Close to sea level in elevation, the Hog Island Tract is a mixture of flat, open land and pine forest interspersed with tidal marshes and controlled ponds. Intensive wildlife management on this tract includes a vast dike system to create impoundments that are seasonally drained and flooded to produce native plant foods for wintering waterfowl. Surrounding fields provide an additional food source in the form of annual agricultural crops. The Carlisle Tract is the management area's "upland," at about 35 feet in elevation. Here, timbered areas have been reforested with loblolly pine, and plantings of wildlife food and cover crops are located along power line rights-of-way. Some 50 acres of additional marshlands along Lawnes Creek invade the Carlisle and Stewart Tracts.

Smith's Fort Plantation

Nestled on the south side of the James River, Smith's Fort Plantation offers a quiet refuge from the bustle of everyday life. Built sometime between 1751 and 1765, the story-and-a-half brick house is laid in Flemish bond and was home to Jacob Faulcon and his family. A gabled roof is accented with dormer windows. Its architectural significance lies in the interior where much of the original woodwork still exists. However, Smith's Fort had a long and varied history in Virginia.

Directly across from Jamestown on Gray's Creek, Smith's Fort offered a strategic location in the early seventeenth century. Later in that century, Chief Powhatan gave his new son-in-law, John Rolfe, a grant of land as a dowry gift on the occasion of his marriage to Pocahontas.

The APVA acquired Smith's Fort Plantation in 1933. It has been fully restored and has a fine collection of English and American furnishings. Today, visitors can see the site of the retreat fort, the house, and its small herb garden.
